Researcher Profile

Shang Gao

Bio

Shang Gao is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Multimodal Data Analytics group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he develops novel, scalable deep learning and natural language processing solutions for large scale, clinical applications. Shang's recent work includes developing a novel, state-of-the-art deep learning architecture for extracting key data elements from cancer pathology reports for the National Cancer Institute, scaling Transformer language models for pretraining and fine-tuning on ORNL's Summit supercomputer, and developing a transfer learning and semi-supervised approach for biomedical named entity recognition in low data settings. Shang also works closely with the Learning Systems group at ORNL on a collaborative project with General Motors and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where they use high performance computing, evolutionary algorithms, and reinforcement learning to develop end-to-end imitation learning algorithms for autonomous driving.
