Dr. Prasanna Date (Pras) is a Research Scientist in the Computational Data Analytics Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His research interests span several areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), Quantum Computing (QC), Neuromorphic Computing (NC) and High Performance Computing (HPC). He is currently exploring artificial intelligence algorithms on quantum computers like D-Wave 2000Q, IBM Q and Rigetti, and neuromorphic computers like Intel Loihi. He is also exploring the applicability of all the above algorithmic fields (AI, ML, DL) and architectures (QC, NC, HPC) for autonomous vehicles research. As an intern at ORNL in 2018, he developed an efficient embedding algorithm for D-Wave quantum computers, that outperformed D-Wave’s very own embedding algorithm, which was considered to be the state of the art. He also developed a classical-quantum hybrid approach for unsupervised probabilistic machine learning using Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) and Deep Belief Networks (DBN).
Pras received his PhD and MS in Computer Science as well as MEng in Industrial Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy NY in 2019. He received his BE in Manufacturing Engineering from BITS Pilani, India in 2014. As part of his PhD, he developed a novel Combinatorial Neural Network Training Algorithm (CoNNTrA) for training spiking neural networks on neuromorphic systems like IBM TrueNorth under the supervision of Prof. Chris Carothers. He is a member of AAAI, ACM, APS, IEEE, INFORMS and SIAM.
